What is IPO GMP?
IPO Grey market premium(GMP) is the price of a single share that is traded on the unorganized stock exchange, called a Grey market. Usually before the IPO of any company their stock is traded in an unauthorized market! and the price on which they are traded is known as GMP. So is it legal? the answer is NO. This is an unregulated and unauthorized market and any investor should avoid this.
Why should I consider GMP if it is not regulated?
So usually GMPs are analyzed by many investors to see the price trend. Remember they are not trading in Grey market. The GMP trend shows us that if the stock is in demand or not. For example, if the GMP of ABC company trades 5 days before its IPO for rupees ₹10 and just days before its GMP becomes ₹12 then it’s considered to be good for investing and the listing expectation will be at least (20%).
Also, there is one more catch do you think that GMP is the same price as the bidding price of the IPO? or do you think you can predict the IPO bidding price by seeing the GMP trends? I will say NO! Because in the Grey market, the GMP will be the lowest than the offer price in IPO(usually). And you can’t predict the bidding price by seeing the GMP trend. Because bidding price should be such a price that you can get an allotment of the share after bidding closes (remember for the many IPO you can only face the rejection as the share is not allotted to you).
The downside of just seeing the GMP price
Every positive brings its downside. There is also the downside of the GMP trends which are listed as follows:-
- Many times GMP trends can be manipulated to just uplift the PR of the stock and it is unregulated so anyone can’t do anything about this.
- Also, GMP price can be motivated based on the influence, rumors, and misleading news so be careful not to use many GMPs as the only parameters for investing in an IPO.
- Many times IPO GMP gives misleading information and the listing price is not gain as it is indicated in the Grey market.
Can I only see the IPO GMP to decide to invest in the IPO?
No, you can’t rely on the information of GMP. Moreover, there is not any single GMP website that can give you the correct price trend. So just relying on GMP can be misleading. For investing in stock you can analyze the fundamentals of the company, you can also read the IPO Prospectus available on the NSE and BSE websites. To analyze the IPO you can also visit the website which shows you the correct and up-to-date information such as Screener and Tradingview.
